Do you wake up with jaw tension? Notice clicking when you chew? Struggle with headaches or ear discomfort that never quite make sense? If so, you’re not alone. TMJ disorders are far more common than most people realize — and they often go undiagnosed.
Join us as we host Matt Mailhot, PT, DPT, CCTT from Saco Bay Physical Therapy for an in-depth discussion on TMJ Disorders & Treatment.
What Is TMJ?
TMJ stands for temporomandibular joint — the hinge joint connecting your jaw to your skull. It plays an essential role in:
- Chewing
- Speaking
- Swallowing
- Facial movement
When this joint or the surrounding muscles become irritated, misaligned, or overworked, it can lead to a range of uncomfortable symptoms.
Common Signs & Symptoms of TMJ Disorders
TMJ disorders may present as:
- Jaw pain or stiffness
- Clicking or popping sounds when opening or closing the mouth
- Difficulty chewing
- Ear pain or a sensation of fullness
- Headaches (often mistaken for tension or migraine headaches)
- Neck and shoulder tension
Because the jaw is closely connected to posture, breathing, and muscle balance, symptoms often extend beyond the jaw itself.
What You’ll Learn at This Program
During this session, we will explore:
- ✔️ What TMJ disorders are and how they develop
- ✔️ Why posture, stress, and muscle imbalance play a role
- ✔️ How specialized TMJ rehabilitation works
- ✔️ Practical strategies to improve jaw comfort and mobility
Matt will discuss evidence-based rehabilitation techniques, including:
- Posture correction
- Gentle joint mobilization
- Muscle retraining
- Relaxation and nervous system regulation techniques
This is a targeted, conservative approach that often helps reduce pain and improve function without immediately resorting to invasive procedures.
